The Nobel Committee for the Peace Prize is selected by the Swedish Parliament. Like any award committee, it makes a selection based on the preferences of the individual members. Obama was the choice of a handful of old Swedes. God did not make the selection. Past winners have ranged from Arafat to Carter to Gore. This year the guys picked Obama, for whatever reason. It is their choice to make. Comedy shows ranging from Saturday Night Live to the Daily Show have poked fun at their choice. I laughed with them, so I think the choice is amusing.

Well, a handful of old Norwegians, actually. (Oddly enough, although all other Nobel prizes are awarded by a Swedish committee, the terms of Nobel's request the parliament of Norway to select the peace prize committee. Go figure.)

But, yes, the committee is free to select whomever they want, from the Quakers (1947 peace prize) to Kim Dae Jung (2000 peace prize "for his work for... peace and reconciliation with North Korea in particular" -- and we see how peaceful North Korea is). Apparently every US president since Theodore Roosevelt has been nominated, pretty much every year, as a matter of course. All except poor old Herbert Hoover, who actually kind of deserved it for his work with the Committee for Relief in Belgium during WWI.

To me, the important thing about it is that the leader of the US has been given an international honor. It's a compliment to the US, something for US citizens to be proud of even if they did not vote for this particular leader.
